• How long does it take to install a water heater?

  The time it takes to install a water heater depends on what kind of water heater you currently have and the kind of new water heater you plan to install. Here are some rules of thumb:

  • Tank to tank: If you are simply swapping your old hot water tank with a similar, but newer one, expect the process to take three hours. It takes 45–60 minutes to drain your unit, disconnect and remove it. Putting the new one in takes 30 minutes. And then expect another 45 minutes to an hour to connect it and test it for leaks.
  • Tank to tankless: If you are switching from a traditional tank water heater to an energy-efficient tankless one, the replacement will take longer. You probably need new power and water lines, and to add an air vent. The last step is mounting and connecting it.
  • Tankless to tankless: This process is straightforward and generally the fastest. Depending on the circumstances, installation takes 1–3 hours.
