Your Furnace System: How It Works

The furnace in your Houston home is likely fueled by natural gas, propane, electricity or oil. It creates warm air and circulates it through your home’s duct system. In cooler climates, most homes will have a split system with an indoor furnace unit. A furnace consists of four major components:

  • Burner: Uses a fuel source, such as natural gas, oil, propane, or electricity, to generate heat.
  • Heat exchanger: Is warmed by the burner.
  • Blower: Moves air through the duct system. Cool air is pulled into the ducts, passed through the heat exchanger to be heated, and redistributed through the air ducts. This is a continuous flow.
  • Flue: Sends gaseous byproducts outdoors.

Efficiency & Savings

There are several variables to consider when replacing your Houston furnace. Energy efficiency and potential cost savings are two of the most important factors. Today’s furnaces are designed to be more energy-efficient compared to models from 10 or 15 years ago. Pay attention to the AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) rating if you’re looking to increase the efficiency of your Houston heating system. The higher the rating, the more energy (and dollars) you’ll save. Our Air Conditioning and Heating Buying Guide provides more information on what details to consider when purchasing a new unit.
