EV Charger Installation FAQs

Do I need a permit or licensed electrician to install a Level 2 EV charger?

Yes, in most jurisdictions, a permit is required, and installation must be done by a licensed electrician. This ensures the system meets local electrical codes and avoids safety or insurance issues.
Is my electrical panel capable of supporting a Level 2 charger?

A Level 2 charger typically requires a 240V circuit and 30- to 60-amp breaker. An electrician will need to evaluate your panel capacity to see if there’s room for an additional dedicated circuit. Panel upgrades may be necessary in older homes.

This can all be down through our online EV Charger Installation solution by uploading pictures of your electrical panel. Our team will review the images and if a panel upgrade is needed, the cost of this upgrade will be shown in your instant upfront price.
How much does it cost to install a Level 2 charger at home?
Costs can range from $1,200 to $2,000+, depending on:
- Electrical panel upgrades needed
- Distance from panel to charger location
- Labor rates in your area
- Whether trenching or conduit is required (e.g., detached garage)
Where is the best place to install the charger?
Close to where you park your EV
- Near your electrical panel (to minimize wiring cost)
- Indoors or in a weather-protected area (for charger longevity)
- Accessible for future-proofing (e.g., second EV)
Can I use a Level 2 charger with any electric vehicle?

Most Level 2 chargers use a J1772 connector, which is compatible with almost all EVs in North America (Tesla vehicles need an adapter).
